Lexington, OH - Matthew Cowley made it three wins in one day in F1600 Championship Series competition with a last-lap move on Zach Holden at Mid-Ohio in round six of the 2017 season. Cowley becomes the first F1600 driver to win three races in one day. The third victory for the Team Pelfrey driver came ahead of K-Hill teammates Holden and Lance Fenderson.
Matthew Cowley, Team Pelfrey:
"I knew there were yellows down at turn four because of an incident earlier in the race. So I knew to win I had to be first on the back stretch. I made a move on Zach going up into turn two and held it from there."
Zach Holden, K-Hill Motorsports
"On the last lap, I was in the lead but going into turn two Matthew kind of faked me out. I looked in my mirrors and didn't look where I was braking and went in too deep. I'll take a second."
Lance Fenderson, K-Hill Motorsports
"It was a bit chaotic near the end. There was an incident in turn five that helped me out. I thought I had something for them but I wish we should have gotten the win."
Joe Colasacco, Auriana Racing:
"It was the pace we wanted to have all weekend. We had some trouble early today but it was fun to race with the kids. I have to figure out if I ever want to stick my nose in there with the young guys. They are fun and racing clean and have great car control. I want to thank my crew for putting the car back together after impacting the wall earlier."
The Series next heads to Indianapolis, June 8-11.
